Common Gift Ideas for Writers

Is there someone you love who loves to write? As a writer myself, I'm going to try to help you come up with some gifts that writers will love. This guide can serve as a brainstorming tool, but also as a shopping guide. It contains direct links to the products to make shopping quick and easy.

Note: Most products in this guide are found on Amazon and most offer free two-day shipping with Amazon Prime. If you do not have an Amazon Prime membership, you should try the Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial. With Amazon Prime, you not only receive free two-day shipping on qualifying purchases, but you'll also enjoy free books, movies, and more.

Are journals overrated? I've seen several posts this year that suggest getting a writer a journal is useless because everyone will buy them a journal. Are journals really that boring? I feel like you can never have too many journals. As a writer myself, I have several journals that I haven't even had the chance to write in yet, but I adore them all—it's a prized collection. Well, either way, if you think journals are boring, then consider getting your writer friend a different kind of journal. Maybe like this Succulent Lasercut Wood Journal for only $29.

With today's technology literally at our fingertips—smartphones, tablets, and computers—who needs a typewriter? Well, no one, actually; but that's what's so cool about them! These things are becoming so rare that they're a true gem to own. There's nothing like typing up a letter or manuscript on an old-fashioned typewriter. Your writer friend will probably get lost in the click-click-click of the typewriter on a dark and stormy night. This Brother Printer Electronic Typewriter with Dictionary is only $106 with free two-day shipping with Amazon Prime. Don't have Prime but still want this deal? Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial!

Yearly Planner

A planner can help your life go more smoothly. A motivational planner can motivate you to stay on track. I write down expenses, business deadlines, due dates, my son's school schedule, and so much more in my planner. It's an excellent way to keep track of everything, all in one place. Writers tend to feel disorganized, so this is a necessity. This 2017 "Best Year Ever" Yearly Planner is $15.

Writing Utensils

Writers know what I mean when I say that I'm always losing pencils and pens. I feel that I can never have too many. My favorite brand? Pilot, of course! Their pens are long-lasting, smooth, and they just feel right in my hands. They're high-quality but low-priced, which is something I appreciate. Right now you can get the Pilot Varsity Disposable Fountain Pens for $15 on Amazon (it's a 6-pack so you'll have enough for about a week if you only lose one per day).

Know a writer like me that likes to work with the windows open (weather-permitting)? Well, then paperweights come in handy. Trust me. I didn't realize the importance of paper weights until I had my entire blog binder pages scattered on my desk and opened the window on a windy day in 2008. Big mistake. I spent about an hour putting everything back in order. So yeah, paperweights. Here's a cool-looking Dome Paperweight that also acts as a 1x Magnifier for $15 bucks.

Is there a such thing as a writer who doesn't like to read? I've never met one. I'm sure they exist but they seem to be few and far between. Anyway, there are so many books out there to choose from. I'd suggest picking one based on what your writer friend enjoys the most. But if you're unsure, you can never go wrong with a writer's self-help book. The Writer's Market 2016: The Most Trusted Guide to Getting Published is a good one, and only $17.

Don't want your writer friend to lose those Pilot Disposable Fountain Pens you bought? Get them a planner. They can store paperclips, pens, sticky notes, and maybe some lint they pick off of their shirt as they're typing on their new typewriter. This Vejaoo Organizer Storage Box is a fancy version of a standard organizer and costs $25.

Coming up with gift ideas for someone who loves to write can be a tricky task. Hopefully this guide has helped you in some way. If you have more present ideas for writers, leave a comment!
