Take a Chance on Adventure

Travelling is one thing, holidaying is great - a welcome break from the stresses and strains of a busy life but moving? Isn’t that a step too far?

If you’ve ever visited a city on your holidays and decided you could most definitely live there, why not take that wish and turn it into something a little more concrete? Do you have it in you to put your money where your mouth is, to up sticks and move everything abroad?

In this blog we explore the pluses and minuses to moving abroad, some of the challenges and triumphs you might face but why you should absolutely go for it.

What to Expect

Big changes don’t come without their challenges so there will be times when you question if this really was the right decision for you and your family but for all the questions you’ll be glad you did make that leap.

If you have gone for an overseas posting then you will probably experience some kind of culture shock. That disorienting feeling of being lost, coupled with a sense of frustration at not fully being able to get to grips with the cultural practices of your new home.

The best skill you can develop is to roll with it. Don’t set your personal bar too high, you won’t be fluent and fully on board with what happens in your new home for at least a few months, so get to know it bit by bit.

You will also be a little homesick. From the moment you packed up that North American Van Lines shipment and closed your front door for the last time, you knew you were never going to be the same again. You’ve left behind the people, places and things of your old way of life and you’re slowly changing and growing as a person. There may be a fear that your friends back home will no longer relate to you or that they may move on, but good friendships will survive the distance and with modern technology and communication there’s no reason why you can’t stay in touch.

It really helps if you set up base somewhere near a vineyard or near a ski resort, you’ll be surprised at the number of people who suddenly want to come and visit.

No Regrets

Making life changes as big as moving across the country or to a new continent are not to be taken lightly, but at the same time lots of people do it every year and don’t look back. When you’ve been taken by a country or city, take time for some serious consideration about whether you could live there or not.

Start making some inquiries and you’ll be surprised at how many doors suddenly become open to you.

Push through those doors and you’ll find yourself getting more and more excited and nervous as your dreams take one step closer to becoming a reality. Take a chance on the adventure of a lifetime, you’ll never regret it.
