The Health Risks of Home Working and Why You Should Be Careful

Working freelance at home comes with many advantages. You’re offered more freedom, you have more control over the time you dedicate to work and you can often earn more income if you have the right contacts. With all of the benefits of working at home, it’s no surprise that more and more people are switching over to the self-employed way of life. However, there are some health risks and concerns that you should be looking out for.


Accidents that involve lifting of heavy objects

Most people think of at-home jobs as something that can be done digitally over the internet with laptops and computers. However, the reality is that a lot of at-home workers are contractors that have to lift heavy equipment and supplies in and out of their car on a regular basis. Doing this could eventually lead to all kinds of physical pain which will send you to the hospital if you’re not careful. In addition, if an accident does occur when you’re lifting a heavy object, then you’ll have no one to help you get up and you’ll need to either call out for assistance or phone an ambulance.

Posture problems and poor ergonomics

One of the biggest problems with working at home is your chair. If you’re using a cheap dining chair or something that is incredibly uncomfortable, then you might find that your back will end up hurting especially if you’re hunched over all of the time. This can lead to pain which requires a back doctor to examine or it could even lead to a permanent change in your posture if you leave it for too long. Thankfully, a medical professional can help remedy this and it’s in your best interests to ensure that your back and computer ergonomics are comfortable and suited for you.

Lack of exercise due to sedentary work life

People often take their commutes for granted because they’re slow and boring, but the reality is that you actually get quite a bit of exercise even just walking up and down the stairs of your office or when you travel to work. When you work at home, you have no commute to make unless you’re a contractor and will end up living a sedentary lifestyle that doesn’t put your heart to work. As with any sedentary lifestyle, the counter is to simply be more active. This means getting up to make a drink more often, going to the gym or even just working out at home when you can.

As you can see, there are a couple of health concerns that you should be on the lookout for. While working at home might not seem dangerous or concerning, you should always keep in mind the lifestyle changes and how they can negatively affect you once you get used to it. As long as you’re diligent about your lifestyle changes and careful with how you work, you stand a very high chance of taking advantage of the freelancing lifestyle while completely avoiding any adverse health problems.
